FA 34a Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Banpo, Yangshao Culture, Radiocarbon Dating
Document Summary
Artifacts from this site are dated using carbon dating. The site was excavated during "54 "57; it was the first large scale excavation by the prc. A large number of relics have been unearthed. Banpo culture still used the red and black painted style from yangshao pottery. The black pigment contains manganese, and the iron rich clay produces the red clay. Children"s burial urns were kept in houses and are cocoon like in design. Banpo water jars use a pointed foot and are somewhat elongated and contain striated markings. The pointed foot likely helped to collect water from a river. The striated marks are made via cord marking, pressing a string against the clay and rolling it. Hunting, farming, and fishing were the primary means of obtaining food. Hemp was grown for the fibers, and silkworms were kept for their silk. Banpo bone needles with eyes (eye of the needle) have been discovered.
