FA 34a Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Jade, Longshan Culture, List Of Neolithic Cultures Of China
Document Summary
Longshan and other cultures were physically separated from yangshao due to marshes, resulting in independent developments. Longshan produced a very thin, long, and black stemmed cup (as thin as 0. 2 0. 3 mm. ). The black color was produced by reduction firing (kiln with reduced amount of oxygen) and the introduction of smoke towards the end of the process. The thinness was the result of the use of very fine clay and the potter"s wheel. Some longshan pottery have perforated designs, and some cups are not black. Longshan had many spearheads and arrowheads, either for warfare or hunting. The notion of warfare is supported by the presence of settlement walls that are thick and tall. The wall had a circumference of 1 mile, and was built using the rammed earth technique. This technique would also be used to build the great wall. The wall would have had the strength of concrete.
