Taejo (1392 1398) founded the joseon. The yangban were able to impose neoconfucianism upon joseon in a way that china was unable to (territory size restrictions). The yangban theoretically were a meritocracy and reestablished civil service exams, but required previous generations to have had been a part of the elite (3 generations prior). The neoconfucians held merchants and the military in disdain, especially the former. Sejong the great (1418 1450) invited various members of the lower classes to rise up and join the yangban elite. Sejong"s council invented many inventions ranging from the.
