Maritime languages = austronesian (aka malayo polynesian), and champa (now central vietnam) was a part of this island based language group. Austro asiatic probably the original language group in mainland se asia. This group included the languages of monic, khmer, and vietic. Tibeto burman languages (often grouped as sino tibetan) migrated into east asia. Tai kadai languages were late migrants to east asia: early se asia. Mahayana buddhism and hindu buddhism first emerged in the java region and later emerged in the mainland. Theravada buddhism was widely unpopular initially in east asia with a strong base only in sri lanka. It is assumed that one would serve a monastery both in their teen years and the end of their life: the mongol empire and the tai. The early tai chiefdoms were pushed south into mainland se asia by the mongols.
