HIST 80a Lecture 16: Turko – Mongolian Synthesis Lecture Notes
Document Summary
As they extended their conquest, the silk road came to an end. Marco polo wrote of his tales in the east, noting markets, trade, money, and products. His accounts are disputed as they use persian names/stylization and lacks vital cultural and geographical descriptions. Ibn battuta traveled to the east, accounting tales of medieval cultures in africa, etc. His accounts are believed to be more accurate than those of marco polo. Christianity and the plague both traveled between the east and west. Plague is believed to derive from yersinia pestis in rodents and spread via the trade of rodent fur. This belief"s validity is questioned, but the impact is accepted. Europe (black sea trade) helped to spread the disease. Bubonic plague was spread via animals, but afterwards pneumonic plague spread via the air (coughs, sneezes, etc. ). Indian black rat was overtaken by the norway brown rat.
