HIST 80b Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Kami, Meiji Oligarchy, Meiji Period
Document Summary
The meiji oligarchs end the practice of feudalism by nationalizing the land under the emperor. In 1871, the domains were replaced by prefectures. The daimyo are divided from the samurai and were given new titles as the new meiji aristocracy. Japan"s industrialization saw two stages under the military and the chonin class. The west introduced brick material for construction and protection against fires. The brick architecture was effective against fires, but not earthquakes, unlike the traditional wood based architecture. Early industrialization focused on textile manufacturing that employed many young women. Traditionally, some women had worked as merchants or courtesans, but the new textile transformation saw a dramatic shift for women in the workforce (which would be reversed later in the following century). Legislation was passed that forbade women from cutting their hair. The early successful industrialists became the heads of the zaibatsu corporations.
