Direct or slightly indirect from almost all area --cortical and subcortical. Not freedom from all environmentel influences, but Autonomy is balance between outer environment and inner state/goals. Cannot be completely independent of environment in which it operates. Ex. self-autonomous google car must respond to surroundings (pedestrians, other cars) One manifestation of less: forced hyperphasia (not aphasia (loss of speech) but hyperphasia) Hyperphasia- person doesn"t shut up, person has uncontrolled running comentary on everything: glass of water , doctor walking by . Produces a running verbal comentary on everything she sees- even when ordered to stop. Patient with forced hyperplasia showed other problems (play- doing something) Imitative behaviors, man touches chin, patient touches chin. When asked to stop she recognized the order but said i want to stop, i can"t . Francois lhermitte (1986) adopted unusual approach to study patients" behavior. Observed patients in normal enviornment (in his house) Found that environmental stimuli can dominate behavior.
