Saw little of theatrical parents, who divorced when he was young. Grew up with little parental discipline and few strict controls over his behavior. Started by majoring in physics psychology. Resisted the trends to psychoanalytic study of self and advocated the use of science. Multifaceted approach yielded 35 primary factors (mostly temperament - split into 23 normal and 12 pathological), using factor analysis. Focused on 3 personality factors, using criterion analysis. Eysenck thought cattell gave too much emphasis to factor analysis. Sanguine (excess blood sturdiness, high color, cheerfulness) Phlegmatic (excess mucus slow, solid, and apathetic) Choleric (excess yellow bile irascible and violent) Kant updated hippocrates and organized them on 2 basic comparisons feelings and activity. Jung 2 basic attitudes introversion/extroversion, and also linked these with neurotic disorders. Sheldon connections between physiques and temperaments. Endomorphs (soft roundness) visceratonia general love of comfort, relaxation, sociability, people and food. Mesomorphs (predominant muscle, bone, and connective tissue) somatotonia.
