Jim crow laws (397) state and local laws in the united states enacted between 1876 and: stripped blacks of many modest social, economic, and political gains made (inhibited black agitation for equal rights). Black codes (376) throughout the south, this authorized local officials to apprehend unemployed blacks, fine them, and hire them out to private employers. Some forbade blacks to own/lease farms or take jobs other than plantation workers/domestic servants (like slaves). Congress responded with extending freedmen"s bureau and civil rights.
