ASCI 112 Lecture Notes - Lecture 25: Sioux Center, Iowa, Enviropig, Dna Profiling
Document Summary
Genetics: the study of how characteristics (traits) of living things are transferred from one generation to the next. Heredity: is the passing on of traits from parents to their offspring. E. g. you may have inherited your mother red hair. A unique sequence of dna that determines what kind of characteristics that an individual will have. Is an individuals observable characteristics such as behavior, physical appearance, biological/physiological processes. How are genetics being used: the development of new breeds, genotypes are used for identifying breed ancestors in mixed breed dogs, artificial selection, more productive animals. Choosing to breed together only animals that share desirable phenotypic traits. Genetically modified animals: the enviropig is a genetically modified yorkshire pig that has the capability to digest plant phosphorus better, genetically modified animal products are highly scrutinized by government and public. Benefits are reduced feed costs and pig produces less pollution.
