BIO 227 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Edge Effects, Microclimate, Habitat Destruction
Document Summary
The boundary between natural habitats and developed habitats: microclimate, disturbance (wind, fire) Can occur 400m into forest when moisture is over 100m: predation from exotic or weedy species. Brown headed cowbirds are brood parasites: put eggs in songbirds nest which compete for food and attack and eat young, leads to warblers feeding cowbirds instead. Edge effects would cause the z marked sites to be profoundly different, even though they may appear identical to the local site. Factors affecting edge effects in a patch: Shape: edge area increase as patch gets less circular. Disturbed gaps in habitat grow and join, reducing to isolated patches. Loss of wetlands in southern san joaquin valley -> agriculture tulare lake.
