LA 212 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Fletcher Steele, Georges Braque, Cubism
Document Summary
Partly home taught and eventually went to a boys school. Went to harvard in1907 to study landscape architecture. Left harvard to work on an apprenticeship with warren manning. Transition from traditional beaux arts (copying old gardens and replicating them for wealthy people) to modernism (creating your own unique designs) Steele"s design philosophy stemmed from two main beliefs. That landscape architecture as an art form on par with painting or music. Took a lot of the original work and recreated it to a more modern piece while trying to keep up with the original themes. A lot of di erent styles were used to make it unique and his own style. Used a lot of curvilinear form and edges. Not a lot of straight geometric outlines that had been seen in renaissance and previous eras. One of the most photographed architecture items in history are the blue stairs from this piece.
