How do we analyze a play according to aristotle: each play must have a unified single action (incentive moment->recognition, a unified single location, unified single day. Aristotle"s 6 elements of a drama: plot, character, thought, language, pattern, spectacle. Point of attack- where the play begins in the longer narrative. What are they trying to teach us: historical background. What was happening historically when the play was written: contemporary critique. The method of comedy is to correct people by amusing them. The method of tragedy is to correct people by abusing them. vs. Aristotle didn"t like comedy because it is the imitation of characters of a lower type. (lower class people) The ultimate goal of humor is to provide pleasure. We tend to make jokes about things that make us uncomfortable. *trickster character (common to all cultures) represents chaos, disorder, shattering of boundaries.
