Document Summary

Lyons- troy"s son from a previous marriage play opens on a friday. Wilson creates a new mythology made up of fables, music, history, and politics. Like shepard (and sophocles), his plays are a function of cultural myth-making they all shape the experience of the audience by shaping this world that exists in our minds. Wilson proposed a 10 play cycle- the pittsburgh cycle. 1 play for each decade in the 20th century. His plays rarely feature white characters (if they do, they play roles of authority- cops, lawyers, etc. ) Unlike previous african-american playwrights, he takes to task the black community for not tending to its own problem. Denzel washington and viola davis played in revival on broadway they made about 1/10 gross, took the pay cut to improve their acting they both won tonys. Backstory begins in the reconstruction era of the us (1865-1965)
