Document Summary

Composed of elements- elements are the simplest form of matter, they cannot be broken down into other substances by ordinary means. Atoms: smallest unit of an element that retains all the properties of that element. (ex: all atoms of oxygen are the same) Atomic number: number of protons (8 for oxygen) Atomic mass: number of protons and neutrons (16 for oxygen) Molecule of water: 2 hydrogen atoms bonded to one oxygen atom. Molecule: composed of atoms held together by a bond. Sometimes it is equal and sometimes it is not. If it is equally shared, that is non-polar but if one atom holds the electrons more (more electronegative), that is a polar covalent bond. Water dissolves salts and hydrophilic molecules (water loving) Hydrophobic molecules: something water does not dissolve (water fearing) Bonds that hold together multiple molecules of water. Very weak bonds- but strengths in numbers.
