Many ways to explain the meaning of a word. Thru examples, telling a story, in any # if ways. Express the meaning of a word by giving a definition of it. When word is defined, certain other words are supplied which together have the same meaning as the word being defined. Ex: word brother defined as male sibling, so they have equal meaning. Definition is a report of an ordinary meaning of words. If reportive definition is accurate, then one may substitute the defining words for the word defined in most sentences w/ changing the meaning of the sentence. In one cae, however, substituting the definition of a word for the word itself in a sentence changes the meaning of the senence. The word male sibling has seven letters. Definition is correct in the case there is no possible word with a brother who is not a male sibling or vice versa. Use same method to test reportive definitions.
