BIOL 222 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Adenine, Smooth Muscle Tissue, Microtubule
Document Summary
Cells: cell is the structural & function unit of living organism, function of organism varies on individual & activities of its cells, structure & function are interrelated, cells are made from preexisting cells. Extracellular materials: particles found outside of cell. Classes include: extracellular fluids (body fluids), interstitial fluid, blood plasma, cerebrospinal fluid, cellular secretions (i. e. saliva, mucus, extracellular matrix. Cell organization: plasma membrane (fluid mosaic model, holds cell contents, lipid bilayer(phosolipids) (hydrophobic tails &hydrophilic heads, amphipathic- has both hydrophobic & hydrophilic parts, cholesterol stabilizes/strengthens, sugars(surface) from glycocalyx, proteins function by attachment, recognition, transport & reception. Membranes are selectively permeable- some molecules pass through easily/others do not. Tight junctions- interlocking junctional proteins: nothing can pass through(impermeable, examples: stomach, kidney. Membranous organelles: mitochondria- site of atp synthesis, endoplasmic reticulum, interconnected flattened membranous tubes, outer nuclear membrane. Rough er: outer surface with attached ribosomes, transports & modifies proteins. *tay-sachs disease- lack of lysosomal enzyme needed to break down glycolipids.
