Prehistory vs. history - when do the historical eras for civilizations begin: upper and lower egypt, upper egypt = southern egypt. Nile is one of the only river in the world that flows north. Egypt constantly interacting with ancient nubia - conquering them: southern neighbors. Mesopotamia - the land between the two rivers. Hierakonpolis (greek name) = nekhen (egyptian name) - religious center, temple to horus - capitol of upper egypt: polis = city, towns attracted the semi-nomadic populations, greater opportunities: employment, security. Abydos - the preferred spot of the early dynastic period pharaohs to be buried: pharaoh - egyptian king, associated with the god osiris later on (dynasty 4) Osiris = god of the next life: osiris is married to isis (his sister) and they have horus who is married to hathor. By 3000 bc, egypt is being ruled by one pharaoh. Temples were made out of stone and not mud bricks: lots of cemeteries.
