Overview: cancer within the scope of a year: 1. 6 * 106 new cases of cancer/year, 4500/day, 1021 cell mitoses/day, 1 in 106 m, 1015 mutations. Angiogenesis (fifth trait for cancer to become full-blown metastatic cancer: avascular phase. Can grow to be about 1 millimeter in diameter. Not larger unless vascularized: attract blood vessels to penetrate into heart of tumor and grow inside, angiogenesis switch. Idea: as tumor recruited vessels to tumor, he could look at early phases of vascularization and get a handle on what was going on. Surprise: stayed in avascular state unless he shaved off part and injected in mouse, where would grow quite large. Learned that there was a profusion artifact in organ system that prevented vascularization. Endothelial cells are some of most quiescent cells in human body. Really do not proliferate except in special circumstances. Growth of endothelial cell has very leveraged growth on tumor cell.
