Document Summary

Lecture 8: list the regions of the pons and medulla that regulate respiratory rate and depth, describe the basic function of each, and explain how afferent input from proprioceptors can influence breathing patterns. Pre-botzinger complex : sets the basic rhythm of resting breathing, stimulates drg. Dorsal respiratory group (drg) : stimulates -motor neurons of inspiratory muscles. Ventral respiratory group (vrg) : used to enhance ventilatory drive and stimulate expiratory muscles, increasing depth of respiration, activates drg. Pneumotaxic center : sends an off message to the drg to assist in smooth expirations. Apneustic center : opposes the off message from the pneumotaxic center to assist inspiration. Located in the aortic and carotid bodies of the systemic arteries (same places as the major baroreceptors). Respond more strongly to decreases in p o2 than increases in p co2 . Also weakly responds to changes in blood h + (carotid body only; increases firing with a decrease in ph)
