Chicago is a fairly new city (not incorporated until 1857) compared to us and europe. Two waves of the great migration to chicago (1920s and 30s, and then 50s and 60s) Wages were dramatically higher in north than in south, but there may have been a tradeoff in absolute quality of life. There was significant racial violence, but perceived as less in the south. Led to white flight very quickly and combined with groups not renting to minorities or engaging in blockbusting. Those who could leave did, caused an apparent shift as upperclass blacks moved towards white areas, but in actuality, the black population was just becoming more diverse and spread out. Quick move led to overcrowding and african americans were confined to blackbelt.
