Document Summary

Around 1650 b. c. , drought and famine made many groups of people migrate toward egypt, which had water from the nile river. While the jews journeyed across the sinai peninsula, moses climbed to the top of a mountain to pray and speak with god. When moses came down from mount sinai, he brought the ten commandments. These commandments and the other teachings from god delivered to the people became the basis for the religious laws of judaism. The jews believed that these laws formed a covenant between god and the jewish people. The covenant was based on the idea that god is just and demanded a high standard of moral conduct from human beings. This emphasis on justice, morality and an individual relationship with god set judaism apart. The jews decided they needed a king to lead them. 922 b. c. , the jews were united under three able kings in succession.
