An island, a few miles southwest to athens, in which the athenian fleet was placed as their city was destroyed. Themistocles persuaded athenians to flee the city and fight at sea, and with this tactic the persians were pushed back- their warships destroyed. After this battles, persians lost their final battle at platea, afterwards remaining on the defensive. Greeks saw the war as a turning point in their history, gaining a new sense of confidence and freedom. Athens basked in glory, emerging as the leader of the delian. The delian league was formed by hundreds of city-states; they served to protect. Greece from the persians, however the athens used the power from the league to their own advantage. The objectives of the delian league were to free cities under persian rule, guard against persian ships, and protect the aegean from pirates. Pericles- athens elected pericles, the city"s most important leader general, 32 times over.
