Class 7b feb 18 wwi the home front. Focus on the individual and how war reduces individual liberty: positive impact. Wwi was bad and the positives might not have made up for the negatives, but no one but a romantic reactionary would wish to go back to the way things were before: how nation-states conduct total war. Totalitarian nature of the war machine: linked back to clausewitz"s view of war as primordial violence and hatred with the tendency of limited war to escalate to absolute war. All about the power of nationalism: insturments for total war. Contintental european states went into the war already with conscription in place. Britain began march 2, 1916 (managed to get all volunteer army for a while) Allocate scarce resources: can"t enlist all men. Deceive the public by lying, concealing info, and distorting truth. Much less hard in wwii b/c nazis are so evil and we"d just been attacked.
