Document Summary

Class 7a feb 16 conduct of wwi (2) War was fought and won primarily on the western front (looking in particular at where casualties occurred) Other dimensions to the war: isonzo front. Very mountainous terrain (fighting done along 60 mile isonzo river from 1915-1917 with many battles that changed little) Bulgaira, austro-hungarians, and germans ganging up against serbians. Serbia beaten pretty quickly, but british and french still try to come to aid. Nothing much happened, but british had to leave troops there through war because the bulgarians tied them up so that the troops couldn"t be moved and used elsewhere on the western front where they"d be more essential. Allies spent much time searching for the central european soft underbelly but didn"t really find anything useful: dardenelles. Allies needed to get through turkey (take istanbul, open up the bosporous) in order to establish a supply chain to russia. Controlled by ottoman empire, but was sick man of europe, very weak.
