Sam gillian- threw paint on canvas than hung it up in a certain way. Looks like a drop cloth on a clothes lines: breaking divide between painting and sculpture. Walter de maria, lighting field: michael heizer, carved rock out of canyon and used that as materiel, poles arranged at a field in new mexico, supposed to attract lightning, robert smithson, spiral jetty, great salt lake, utah. Had idea of prestigious art in the public: richard serra, 120 foot wall- tilted arc- 1981, people wanted to move the piece, serra said it was site specific. In public and different from monuments: structures and other artwork in memory of something, monuments is worshiping something, memorials are remembering something. Photo realism: chuck close, paintings that look exactly like photographs, hyper realism, richard estes, san francisco vibes in his paintings, audrey flack, duane hanson, hyper realistic sculptures. Neo expressionism: georg baselitz, new style of painting.
