Speaker - the person speaking the poem (not necessarily the poet) Subject - what a poem is about. Allusion - reference to something outside the poem. Diction - the art of selecting words; individual word choice. Reasons to choose a word: meaning, context, sound. Irony - disparity btw different levels or terms within a text. High diction - grand, lofty language; elegant; @ court; grand important subject. Low diction - casual, slang; common people + common things/subjects. Classical irony involves a disparity btw degrees of knowledge. Romantic irony involves a disparity btw levels of consciousness.
