Angered north when confeds needed northern sympathy he was widely mourned loss not appreciated until reconstruction. The electoral process continued during the war; the south secession created. Differences between radicals (who wanted to immediately abolish slavery) and the moderates free soilers (mainly concerned about increased economic opportunities for whites)
