Document Summary

The brain is split up into four major sections. Within those sections, there are multiple parts that work together to allow our bodies to function the way they do. These four sections are: hindbrain, midbrain, subcortical forebrain, cerebral cortex. The hindbrain is located right at the top of the spinal cord, the lowest section of the brain. Inside the hindbrain there are four separate parts. Brainstem = responsible for automatic survival functions: contains the medulla = responsible for breathing, heartbeat, etc. and is located at the very tip of the brainstem. Pons = connects the cerebral cortex and the cerebellum. Cerebellum = coordinates voluntary movement and balance. The midbrain is located right where it sounds like it would be i(cid:374) the (cid:373)iddle of the (cid:271)rai(cid:374). It"s towards the bottom, and is the smallest section. Tegmentum = responsible for eye and body movement. Includes the major gland that produces dopamine for the body.
