Document Summary
In order to understand perception, it"s (cid:374)e(cid:272)essar(cid:455) to k(cid:374)o(cid:449) (cid:449)hat is (cid:272)lassified as per(cid:272)eptio(cid:374) a(cid:374)d what is simply a sensation. **sensation = how our sensory receptors and nervous system receive and represent stimulus energy. **perception = organizing and interpreting sensory info, enabling us to recognize meaningful objects and events. Conscious perception requires attention, however attention is very selective. There are multiple ways to interpret perceptions, and most of it involves forming groups. There are two main categories, called gestalt and grouping. Gestalt general perceptual tendency to organize stimuli into a coherent whole (ex: seeing a ri(cid:374)g of i(cid:374)di(cid:448)idual (cid:272)ir(cid:272)les a(cid:374)d (cid:449)hile the(cid:455)"re all separate, the(cid:455)"re per(cid:272)ei(cid:448)ed as a si(cid:374)gle ri(cid:374)g(cid:895) Grouping perceptual tendency to organize stimuli into multiple similar groups. Within the brain, we process perceptions using a number of networks. The schemas and percepts are responsible for sorting through our perceptions as well as keeping visual capture in check.
