ANT 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Acculturation, Cultural Relativism, Subculture
Document Summary
Diffusion: spread of culture from one group to another. Has sped up with developments of technologies and travel. Acculturation: exchange of cultural traits that happens when groups come into contact. Often used when talking about colonization or forced contact . Leads to increased similarities between two groups. Independent invention: something created by a person/culture independently, inventing something new. Globalization: increasing connectedness of the world as a whole, involves all above processes of change. Our primary adaptations to all environments, helps us deal with stressors. Culture shapes how we perform things like eating/drinking/sleeping. We use cultural relativism to show that there is no one right way to do things. Drinking - what/when we drink, legality of alcohol. Sleeping - who you sleep with/how long you sleep, variation with co-sleeping with babies. Bodily functions - where you go and how.
