ANEQ 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Lumbar Vertebrae, Short Loin, Thoracic Vertebrae
Document Summary
The chest goes from the point of the shoulder to the bottom of the barrel. Only as wide as the bones that form it. Narrow- causes forelegs to be too close together. Overly wide- causes horse to roll from side to side. Meeting point of the neck, back and peak of the shoulders. Formed by first 10 or so thoracic vertebrae. Third to fifth will make up the peak of the withers. Should be level with or slightly higher than the croup. Extends from the withers to the loin and supports much of the horse"s weight. Collection is easier for a horse with a short back. Length is determined by the length of each vertebrae in the spinal column. Arabians and morgans have same number of vertebrae. Number of vertebrae varies more among individuals than among breeds. From the last rib to the point of the croup. Support lumbar vertebrae and transfers power from the hind legs forward.
