Document Summary

Study of gold-activated carbon electrodes for the production of hydrogen peroxide. Project autek, mintek, private bag x3015, randburg 2125, south africa. Polycrystalline gold, glassy carbon and gold-activated glassy carbon electrodes were compared for the production of hydrogen peroxide by the cathodic reduction of dissolved oxygen. Gold was deposited on glassy carbon by sputtering with a sputter coater and by electrodeposition from a diluted kaucl4 solution using short potential steps. The sputtered gold particles were not adherent enough, but there were no adhesion problems with the electrodeposited gold particles. The gold coverage of the glassy carbon surface could be varied by applying a different number of potential steps. The overpotential for the electroreduction of oxygen to hydrogen peroxide decreases with increasing gold coverage of the glassy carbon surface, and for gold coverages exceeding about. 16 %, the overpotential is close to that observed on polycrystalline gold.
