Inconsistent or uninvolved parenting practices: higher levels of irritability and harshness, child abuse: 7x higher, authoritarian parenting more common, less monitoring, poorer mental health, depression, etc, less cognitive stimulation and positive interactions, effects buffered by adequate social support. Contextual determinants: stress: stress can dramatically influence parenting, when stressors team up they likely have an additive effect on parenting, stressed parents are less nurturant, supportive, patient, and involved. Contextual determinants: social support: social support: assistance from other people that helps counteract the effects for stress. It leads to the belief that there is someone to turn to when a crisis arises. It doesn"t matter the size of social network/support: emotional support and instrumental support, sometimes we as humans just need validation.
