24 February Mechanoreceptors in the skin Rapidly adapting receptor: turns on and off fast, on for less time Greater location accuracy Slowly adapting: turn on and off slowly, on longer Meissner’s corpuscles – fine, light touch, rapidly adapting, numerous Merkel disk receptors – pressure, slowly adapting, numerous Pacinian corpuscles – vibration, pressure, rapidly adapting, less numerous (deep pressure) Ruffini ending – skin stretch, slowly adapting, less numerous, lined up so they can convey stretch direction Hair receptors – hair displacement Field receptors – skin stretch Glabrous skin – hairless (palm verses back of hand, top vs bottom of foot)
