Document Summary

In order to express genes in dna (blue tubes) have to unwind chromatin. If condensed, cannot express genes b/c rna cannot be transcribed. Histone tails stick out, each have certain affinities. Binds to tail iclicker: which form of packing will lead to this gene being expressed: b) acetylated histones. If dna wrapped up in histones transcription cannot occur. Base methylation: affects gene expression by regulating transcription. Rna polymerase: latches onto dna strand and catalyzes addition of base pairs. Control elements bind w/ transcription factors: activators (if they bind to the control elements and let it happen) or repressors (opposite). Fig 18. 10: don"t worry about all the details, need to know you have activators (***what activators do) Bind similar factors to the control elements, to prevent the activator elements from binding. Control elements in different combinations: ie letters of the alphabet: can be arranged in millions of ways to form different words.
