LIFE 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Atomic Nucleus, Prokaryote, Eukaryote

➔ CHAPTER 1
➔ Parts of Cells
◆ Mitochondria: power plant of the cell
➔ The cell is the lowest level of organization that can perform all activities required for life
➔ All cells:
◆ Are enclosed by a membrane
◆ Use DNA as their genetic information
➔ The ability of cells to divide is the basis of all reproduction, growth, and repair of
multicellular organisms
◆ An organism’s basis for structure and function
➔ Eukaryotic cell - big/interesting cell
➔ Prokaryotic cell - have much more of them, but because they are so much smaller,
they have much less mass
1/20/17
➔ fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) - works by observing oxygen transport
by hemoglobin noninvasively
➔ Three domains of life:
◆ Domain Bacteria ↣ Prokaryotic (single-celled)
◆ Domain Archaea ↣ Prokaryotic (single-celled) ↣ Weird!!
● Resemble bacteria in some ways but resemble eukarya in others (ch. 27)
● Some archaea live in extremely hot and salty places (called
extremophiles)
◆ Domain Eukarya ↣ Eukaryotic (multicellular)
● Includes protists and 3 multicellular categories of things
◆ There may be a fourth domain ↣ Domain Asgard
● Has an ancestor near the Eukarya
● Less related to Domain Archaea
➔ CHAPTER 2
➔ The elements of life
◆ About 20-25% of the 92 elements are essential to life (essential elements)

Document Summary
The cell is the lowest level of organization that can perform all activities required for life. The ability of cells to divide is the basis of all reproduction, growth, and repair of multicellular organisms. An organism"s basis for structure and function. Prokaryotic cell - have much more of them, but because they are so much smaller, they have much less mass. Fmri (functional magnetic resonance imaging) - works by observing oxygen transport by hemoglobin noninvasively. Domain archaea prokaryotic (single-celled) weird! Resemble bacteria in some ways but resemble eukarya in others (ch. Some archaea live in extremely hot and salty places (called extremophiles) Includes protists and 3 multicellular categories of things. There may be a fourth domain domain asgard. About 20-25% of the 92 elements are essential to life (essential elements) Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen make up 96% of living matter. Most of the remaining 4% consists of calcium, phosphorous, potassium, and sulfur.
