LIFE 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Acid Rain, Ethane, Ethylene
Document Summary
Concentration can influence rate of biological reactions. High concentrations of a certain compound can influence other reactions. Acidity- determined by concentration of ph= -log[h +] The higher the proton of hydrogen the more acidic the solution and the lower the ph ph scale is from 0 to 14 ph 7= neutral ph<7= acidic ph>7= basic. The lower the hydrogen protons the higher the ph ph of rain may affect the environment. Anything below 5. 6 is considered acid rain. Acid rain can damage many things such as limestone. If molecules dissolve in the water they can influence [h+] or [oh-] then the acidity of the solution could possibly change. When hcl is added to an aqueous solution the ph gets more acidic. When koh is added to an aqueous solution the ph gets more basic. Stability in the ph is really important to cells. Biological reactions have optimal ph of 6-8 then the cells need to regulate their ph.
