PHIL 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Side Effect, Ice Cream, Connective Tissue Disease
Document Summary
Logical inconsistency between existence of god and the existence of evil. God and evil are incompatible; cannot co-exist. Atheist argument: god is all-good, god is all-knowing. Something we as humans have absolutely no control over. An inherited connective tissue disease that causes severe blisters in the skin of newborns. Something we as humans have control over. Theistic strategy 1 compromise traditional conception of god. If god is not completely perfect, then evil could be explained no more logical consistency. Not all good knows about and is able to stop evil, but chooses not to. Not all-knowing doesn"t want evil and is able to stop evil, but is ignorant of evil. Not all-powerful doesn"t want evil and knows about evil, but is not capable of stopping evil. Theodicy (p. 359) = the attempt to justify god"s permitting evil to occur in the world. God has reasons for allowing evil to exist. May not want evil, but sees the necessity of it.
