PSY 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Bad Trip, Fetus, Endorphins
Document Summary
Most of us have likely used some form of drug in our lives. Substance abuse disorder is when one craves and uses a drug despite its negative impact on their life. An increase in dosage may lead to addiction (tolerance) Abruptly stopping drug use may lead to withdrawal. Withdrawal can be deadly for some drugs, but is more often just uncomfortable and distressing (the norm) Depressants: calm neural activity and slow body functions. Disinhibitor: this is why you may become more open and talkative and do things that you normally wouldn"t (turning sober thought into action) When mixed with alcohol, can be lethal. Long term consequences: withdrawal is so uncomfortable because the body will stop making endorphins and you will be very unhappy during withdrawal. One of the most addictive stimulants is nicotine. Tobacco kills nearly 5. 4 million of its 1. 3 billion customers worldwide. Only about 10% who quit, go back to smoking.
