PSY 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Extraversion And Introversion, Neuroticism, Evolutionary Psychology
Document Summary
As humans we share a lot of similarities with each other. However, we know there are a lot of differences between us as well. Behaviour geneticists focus on understanding how our genes interact with our experiences. One of psychology"s biggest questions: nature vs. nurture. Genes are pretty consistent, it"s the small differences that create diversity. Use twins to study the effects of nature vs. nurture individually. Identical twins develop from a single (monozygotic) fertilized egg that splits in two. Fraternal twins develop from separate (dizygotic) fertilized eggs. Studies of twins in adulthood show that identical twins share more similarities than fraternal twins in: Adopted children tend to be more similar to their biological parents (nature) than their adopted parents (nurture/environment) One of the greatest similarities we share as humans is our adaptability. It"s nature and nurture, not nature or nurture. Your genetic makeup is not a binding contract - the environment matters too.
