PSY 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Subjective Constancy, Psychophysics, Optical Illusion
Document Summary
Sensation - detection of a stimulus via a sensory system. Perception - the cognitive/psychological interpretation of a sensation. The distinction between sensing and perceiving is an important one. Transduction - the process of converting energy from one form to another. Psychophysics - the study of the relationship between stimuli and the sensations and perceptions they evoke. Studied absolute threshold (the least amount of a stimulus that it takes until you can sense it) When we are exposed to a stimulus repeatedly, the nerve cells fire less frequently. Wavelength - the distance between two peaks (determines hue) Amplitude - height of wave (determines intensity) The retina contains receptor cells (cones and rods) Rods are not very good at color reception (peripheral) Cones are mainly for color vision, while rods are better for changes in light. We perceive the color of red because it reflects red wavelengths of light. The retina has three types of color receptors (red, green, blue)
