Characterized by distressing, persistent anxiety or maladaptive behaviours that reduce anxiety. Must exhibit symptoms for 6 months to be diagnosed with gad. Panic attacks - seemingly out of nowhere you seem very anxious. Possible trouble breathing, irregular heartbeat, chest pains, and dizziness. May only last for a few minutes. Can become afraid of having another panic attack. Smokers have a doubled risk of developing panic disorder. Persistent irrational fear and avoidance of a specific object, activity, or situation. Don"t associate with people due to feeling judged. May be so fearful they don"t want to leave their house. Someone who has to perform behaviours because they are anxiety driven. Commonly found in teens and young adults. Must exhibit symptoms (e. g. haunting memories, nightmares, insomnia) for 4 weeks. Common with war veterans and victims of sexual assault, and survivors of natural disasters. The greater the emotional stress during the trauma the more likely ptsd will develop.
