We are seeing increased rates of depression in adolescents. Mania: (intense activity) over-talkative, overactive, elated. Not necessarily happiness: little need for sleep, loud, fast, flighty speech, extreme optimism; find advice irritating, can fuel creativity. Seems to effect men and women equally. Understanding mood disorders: mood congruency, rates and risks. 300 million people with mood disorders: women. More vulnerable to disorders with internal states: men. More vulnerable to disorders with external states: most depressive episodes end on their own, someone with mdd spends about 75% of their life not feeling depress. For about 1 in 4 people who have mdd, it is triggered by some sort of stressful event (e. g. , lose job, death in the family : historical rates of depression.
