PSY 210 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Kurt Koffka, Fritz Perls, Rollo May
Document Summary
In his 30s, may had tb and his life threatened. May was critical of quick xes that lacked emphasis on responsibility. Created 4 problems of existence and themes for therapy. Meaninglessness: how do we make meaning in an ultimately meaningless existence. Trials are good because they bring spiritual healing and rewards - can make meaning out of trials. Transformation values are what tell us how to live. Life is most meaningful when people live according to their values. We all have freedom to change and make something + out of the - Ppl tend to evade responsibility thru spending, drinking, rituals in orders to stave off threats. Isolation is an unbridgeable gap b/t ppl, ultimately alone, feel this when stressed. Some ppl do destructive things b/c they can"t tolerate being alone. Therapy helps clients learn what they can"t get from others and what they must create within.
