Explains away failure, look better to others, protect self-esteem! Behavioral self-handicapping is drinking the night before, doing something we know is bad for us in long run. Verbal self-handicapping is my knee is hurting right before a game, saying something out loud to give ourselves an out/excuse if we fail. Women are less accepting of bsh, judge them as lazy/unmotivated. Reliance on internal or external cues to guide b. High sm: skilled soc. actors, more likely to change b based on situation. Low sm: less attentive to soc. cues, more consistent b across situations.
