PSY 250 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Internal Consistency, Discriminant, Cognitive Psychology
Document Summary
Survey research - structured method of collecting self-reported data. If a validated questionnaire already exists for the construct you want to measure, feel free to use it! If not, you will need to create your own questionnaire items. Double-barreled question- questions that contain two or more distinct ideas or components. This way researchers can separately determine each individual variable. Avoid the word because in your items, it becomes a double-barreled item. Social desirability- tendency to provide answers that are more socially acceptable. Avoid bias in your questions to reduce social desirability, especially with sensitive questions. The way the question is asked can influence how the question is answered. Should women be forced to bear unwanted children? . Questionnaires should include both positively and negatively worded items. Open-ended items- participants freely report their answers, they are not given specific response options to choose from. Pros: participants can describe answers in their own words; good for exploratory research questions.
