Document Summary

Follow correct order of operations for statistical calculations. Agreed-upon habits or conventions that make it easier to communicate about analyses using symbols instead of words. A score for a single variable is generally represented by x. Joe"s score might be 35, but for a generic person, the score is unknown, so we use x instead. When we have two variables, the first is x and the second is y. When we have more than two, the notation gets more complicated. Often, x is the independent variable or predictor and y is the outcome. Refers to the number of observations or score we have on one variable. Often, we have one score for each person, so n = the number of people. Capital letter n is usually reserved for the number of scores in a population (the total theoretical group of observations we are interested in) We often need to add up large numbers of values.
