PSY 370 Lecture 5: writing items and responses
Document Summary
The psychology of item responses: cognitive process for answering a question (knowledge, attitude, personality ) What is this question asking me: retrieval. Thinking about relevant information facts, behaviors, etc: judgement. Choosing which response is most appropriate: response communication. *there"s a lot of room for error in this design however, if you walk yourself through these steps you can vet your items and measurement for such errors. You knew what you meant but respondent may not! Good questions are purposeful and straightforward: clearly tied to the construct you"re measuring. An expert who knows this construct well would likely agree that your items are relevant. Get at the center of the construct not sneak around the edges. Measure the thing you want to measure, not something similar or related but conceptually distinct: not necessarily transparent. Obvious to the test-take what you"re measuring.
