Sensation vs perception: sensation - detection ("does it hurt?", perception - more complicated (how much?, mechanisms of pain, pain modulation, experimental design. Pain sensation: nociception: the sensory experience resulting from activation of neural pathway, physical aspect of pain mechanism, three types of pain receptors, mechanical, punching someone, thermal, temperature, chemical, chemical pain. Seen in hypothalamus & limbic systems: cognitive-evaluative. Attidues/beliefs about the pain: context from experience and cultral conditioning. How do we study: gao et all 2004, aims: sensory and affective components of pain. Iv 1: lesioned amygdala and acc of rats: dv: measured changes in conditioned place preference (fear) and nociceptive responses (pain, findings, pain sensation: not affected by acc or amygdala, pain unplreasantness: mediated by acc. Cold pressor task: pain threshold, subjective point at which unpleasant stimulus becomes painful. Somewhat consistent across subjects: pain tolerance, point at which painful stimulus becomes unbearable, highly variable across subjects, neurological correlates, thalamus.
